Praia da Bordeira

Location: undefined, western Algarve

A 3-kilometer expanse of wild Atlantic beach in the Costa Vicentina Natural Park—one of Portugal's most consistent surf breaks. Rolling dunes stretch inland to the village, while a river lagoon at the southern end provides calm, warm water for families.

Praia da Bordeira is the crown jewel of Portugal's wild west coast—a 3-kilometer sweep of golden sand that stretches from dramatic black cliffs to rolling dunes, with the Atlantic Ocean delivering some of Europe's most consistent surf. Located in the heart of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park near the villages of Carrapateira and Bordeira, this beach feels like the edge of the world. Surfers come from across Europe for Bordeira's reliable waves. The beach's north-northwest exposure catches swell year-round, with waves that work from 2 feet (perfect for beginners) up to 12 feet (experts only). The northern end produces bigger, heavier waves; beginners should stick to the gentler southern sandbanks near the lagoon. Carrapateira Surf School operates directly on the beach with lessons and board rentals. But Bordeira isn't just for surfers. At the southern end, the Ribeira da Bordeira river flows across the sand to meet the Atlantic, creating a warm, calm lagoon that's perfect for families with children. The water here is significantly warmer than the ocean and has no currents—ideal for paddling and playing. The landscape is extraordinary: sand dunes roll inland toward Carrapateira village, covered in maritime vegetation that blooms with wildflowers in spring. The clifftop viewpoint above the beach offers one of the Algarve's most spectacular sunset views—bring a camera. Note that the beach is very exposed to wind, and the Atlantic water is cold year-round (wetsuit recommended even in summer for extended swimming or surfing).
