Praia da Cova Redonda, often called one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, is a hidden gem on the central Algarve coast near Porches. The beach goes by several names—Praia das Gaivotas (Beach of the Seagulls) or Praia do Vila Lara, after the luxurious Vilalara Thalassa Resort perched above it.
This 260-meter stretch of golden sand is framed by dramatic ochre cliffs that have been sculpted by millennia of erosion into fascinating rock formations. The beach's defining feature is a massive rock rising from the sea about 30 meters from shore, shaped remarkably like a whale standing on the eastern side. This natural sculpture has become one of the most photographed landmarks on this stretch of coast.
The cliffs provide natural shelter from winds, creating unusually calm, crystal-clear waters that shimmer in shades of turquoise and emerald. The shallow waters around the whale rock make this an ideal spot for families with children—you can wade out and explore safely while enjoying the marine life that gathers around the formation.
Access to the beach involves descending over 100 steps, but the gentle gradient makes it manageable for most visitors. Alternatively, you can walk through the beautiful gardens of the Vilalara Resort—a publicly accessible path that delivers a jaw-dropping first view of the beach. During summer months, the beach offers sunbed and umbrella rentals, a beach shack serving refreshments, and lifeguard supervision.
