Praia da Ilha da Armona

Location: undefined, eastern Algarve

A pristine 9km barrier island in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, offering endless stretches of white sand and crystal-clear water. Car-free and reached only by ferry, Armona is the Algarve's most accessible island paradise.

Ilha da Armona is the most accessible of the Ria Formosa's barrier islands, yet it feels wonderfully remote. This 9km-long, 1km-wide island is home to just 800 residents, mostly in the charming village where the ferry arrives. There are no cars here - just sandy paths, a scattering of beach houses, and seemingly endless stretches of pristine white sand. The main beach, Praia da Armona Mar, faces the Atlantic Ocean and stretches as far as the eye can see in both directions. The fine white sand and crystal-clear water could easily be mistaken for a Caribbean island, except for the refreshingly cool Atlantic temperature. From the ferry landing, a 20-minute walk takes you through the village and over a wooden boardwalk across the dunes to reach this stunning beach. Walk east and the beach becomes progressively more deserted - even in July and August, you can find stretches with no one in sight. The eastern end is popular with naturists (though not officially designated). The island's beach bar, Camaleão, serves drinks, ice cream, and food at the main beach access point, but if you're planning to explore further, bring your own supplies. The ferry ride back through the Ria Formosa at sunset, with flamingos often visible in the lagoon, is a magical end to a beach day.
