Praia da Ilha da Culatra
Location: undefined, eastern Algarve
A pristine barrier island in the Ria Formosa with traditional fishing villages and endless white sand beaches. Accessible only by ferry, Culatra offers an authentic escape to island life with excellent seafood and unspoiled nature.
Ilha da Culatra is a world apart - a long, narrow barrier island where traditional fishing communities have lived for generations, accessible only by ferry across the calm waters of the Ria Formosa. The island is actually home to two settlements: Culatra village with its colorful fishing boats, and Farol (meaning lighthouse), named for the distinctive red-and-white striped lighthouse that marks the entrance to Faro harbor.
The ocean-side beach is spectacular - kilometers of pristine white sand backed by dunes, with crystal-clear Atlantic water and hardly a soul in sight. The island's car-free status means the only sounds are waves, seabirds, and the occasional fishing boat motor. The walk from the ferry landing through the village to the beach is part of the experience, passing traditional houses, drying nets, and seafood restaurants.
Speaking of seafood - the restaurants on Culatra serve some of the freshest fish in the Algarve, caught by the islanders themselves. Long lunches of grilled fish, local wine, and sea views are a Culatra tradition. The island also offers excellent walking, with paths along the lagoon side (great for birdwatching) and the ocean side (empty beaches stretching to the horizon). The lighthouse at Farol can be visited and offers panoramic views.
