Praia da Ilha da Fuseta

Location: undefined, eastern Algarve

A hidden island gem in the Ria Formosa, reached by a quick ferry from the fishing village of Fuseta. Walk east along the sand to find the deserted Praia da Barra Nova, where you'll feel like you're on a private island. A true hidden gem mostly known to locals.

Praia da Ilha da Fuseta is one of the Algarve's best-kept secrets—a hidden island paradise that remains largely unknown to tourists despite being easily accessible from the charming fishing village of Fuseta. The short ferry ride across the Ria Formosa lagoon, past fishing boats and wading birds, is just the beginning of an adventure that feels a world away from the resort beaches. The island is technically part of the same long sandbar as Ilha da Armona, stretching for kilometers along the coast. Near the ferry landing, you'll find a couple of simple beach bars, basic facilities, and a lifeguarded swimming area. But the real magic lies to the east: walk for 20 minutes along the pristine white sand, and you'll reach Praia da Barra Nova (or Praia da Barra da Fuseta), where you might be the only person in sight. This eastern section feels like a deserted island fantasy—just you, the sand, the sea, and the occasional wading bird. The water is crystal clear and perfect for snorkeling, while the untouched dunes provide a truly wild backdrop. The Ria Formosa's protected status ensures this natural beauty remains unspoiled. For the very adventurous, it's possible to walk the entire length of the island to Armona and catch a ferry back to Olhão—a full day's beach expedition. But most visitors are content to find their own private stretch of paradise and simply enjoy the tranquility.
