Praia da Prainha
Location: undefined, western Algarve
A romantic hidden gem between Alvor and Praia da Rocha, featuring stunning caves, grottoes, and rock formations. Unique elevator access available, or descend via stairs to discover walls adorned with love declarations in the hidden grotto area.
Praia da Prainha, meaning 'Little Beach,' is one of the Algarve's most romantic and unique coastal spots, hidden between dramatic rock formations and featuring a network of caves and grottoes that feel like something from a fairy tale. Located between Alvor and Praia da Rocha, this 400-meter beach offers an intimate escape from the larger, busier beaches of the region.
What makes Prainha truly special is its hidden grotto area, where weathered cliff walls are adorned with carved love declarations—a tradition that has turned this secluded spot into one of the most romantic beaches in the Algarve. The caves and rock formations can be explored at low tide, revealing an otherworldly landscape of arches, tunnels, and sculpted stone.
Access is unusually convenient for such a dramatic beach: an elevator descends from the cliff top directly to the Caniço restaurant at beach level, making it accessible to visitors who might struggle with the typical cliff staircases of Algarve beaches. Alternatively, stairs offer a more traditional descent. The beach has good facilities including the excellent Caniço restaurant, lifeguards in summer, and sun lounger rentals.
Facilities: restaurant, lifeguard, toilets, showers, sunbed-rental
Activities: swimming, photography, snorkeling
Parking: Parking available at cliff top near elevator/stairs access.
