Praia das Furnas
Location: undefined, western Algarve
A secluded 180-meter beach named for its dramatic sea-carved caves in the limestone cliffs. Part of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, this unofficial naturist beach offers complete privacy, natural shade inside the caves, and an untouched wilderness atmosphere.
Praia das Furnas is one of the Algarve's quietest and most untouched beaches, a place where raw nature and complete privacy come together in the protected Costa Vicentina Natural Park. The name 'Furnas' means 'caves' or 'grottos' in Portuguese, referring to the spectacular sea-carved formations in the limestone cliffs that give this beach its unique character.
Measuring just 180 meters in length and 50 meters in width, this intimate beach is framed by dramatic cliffs riddled with caves and crevices. The eastern cliff face features a series of shallow caves that almost appear man-made but were sculpted entirely by the Atlantic waves over millennia. These natural grottos provide the only shade on the beach and have become prized spots—arrive before noon to claim your own private cave for the day.
Praia das Furnas is an unofficial naturist beach, attracting those who appreciate the freedom to sunbathe naturally in a stunning setting. Naturists typically gather near the eastern caves, though the beach welcomes everyone regardless of attire. The remote location and lack of facilities ensure a crowd-free experience even in peak summer.
The beach sits within the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, one of Europe's best-preserved coastal areas. This protected status means no development, no beach bars, and no lifeguards—just pristine sand, crystal-clear water, and the sound of waves echoing off ancient limestone walls.
