Praia de Arrifana is a stunning beach in the municipality of Aljezur, widely regarded as the Algarve's premier learn-to-surf destination. Set within the protected Costa Vicentina Natural Park, this half-mile crescent of golden sand is embraced by towering black cliffs that shelter the bay from the harsh Atlantic winds. The beach's seashell shape, combined with the surrounding cliffs, creates ideal conditions for beginner surfers - consistent, forgiving waves that break gently over a sandy bottom. Multiple surf schools operate directly on the beach, including the renowned Arrifana Surf School with over 18 years of experience teaching all levels. Lessons start from around 44 EUR. Perched on the northern cliff overlooking the beach are the atmospheric ruins of Arrifana Fortress. Built in 1635 to protect the coastline and rich fishing grounds, the original fortress was damaged in the devastating 1755 earthquake. Rebuilt and later abandoned in the 19th century, it was partially restored in 2007 and now offers spectacular panoramic views of the bay. The charming cliff-top village of Arrifana has grown around the surf culture, offering several excellent restaurants including Restaurante Oceano, O Paulo, and Brisamar. The beach holds Blue Flag certification, ensuring clean waters and excellent facilities including lifeguards during the bathing season.
