Praia de Cacela Velha
Location: undefined, eastern Algarve
A stunning, unspoiled beach below one of Portugal's most picturesque clifftop villages. Part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, this peaceful stretch of sand is reached by boat or by wading at low tide—a true hidden gem of the eastern Algarve.
Praia de Cacela Velha is one of those magical places where natural beauty meets authentic Portuguese heritage. The beach lies below Cacela Velha, a tiny whitewashed village perched on cliffs overlooking the Ria Formosa lagoon—complete with a historic fortress, a centuries-old church, and views that will stop you in your tracks.
The beach itself (officially called Praia da Fábrica) is part of the Ria Formosa barrier island system. To reach the sand, you'll need to cross a narrow channel either by small fishing boat (locals offer rides for a few euros in summer) or by wading across at low tide. This slightly adventurous access keeps the crowds away—even in August, you'll find peaceful stretches of sand.
The setting is extraordinary: looking back toward the village, you'll see the fortress walls and white buildings glinting in the sun, with the lagoon's calm waters in the foreground. It's one of the most photographed scenes in the eastern Algarve. The beach has no commercial facilities—no restaurants, no lifeguards, no sunbed rentals. Bring everything you need and embrace the unspoiled simplicity.
Before or after your beach time, explore Cacela Velha village itself. There are just a couple of small cafes, the old fortress (free to enter), and the church—but the views from the clifftop are spectacular. It's a window into traditional Algarve life that has largely disappeared elsewhere on the coast.
