Praia de João de Arens
Location: undefined, central Algarve
An official naturist beach at the base of dramatic cliffs, accessible only by a narrow mountain path or boat. Named after a local shepherd, this pristine cove offers crystal-clear waters, a grotto cave, and complete unity with nature.
Praia de João de Arens holds a unique distinction in the Algarve—it's an officially designated naturist beach, accredited by the Portimão Council, Algarve Tourism, the Portuguese Naturist Federation, and international naturist organizations. Named after a shepherd called João de Arens who once lived nearby, this pristine cove offers one of the region's most unspoiled beach experiences.
Located at the base of the João de Arens promontory, the beach stretches 700 meters and is divided into two sections by a cliff outcrop—which reconnects at low tide. The western section features a cave entrance leading to a mysterious grotto, inviting exploration for those comfortable navigating the terrain.
Access is deliberately challenging: a narrow mountain path descends the cliff face, filtering out casual visitors and preserving the beach's peaceful atmosphere. The alternative is arrival by boat or kayak. This difficulty is part of the appeal—those who make the journey find a beach where the signage requests no ball games, photography, or music, creating an atmosphere of rare tranquility.
The crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, with excellent visibility around the rocky formations. There are no facilities whatsoever—no toilets, rentals, or vendors—just pristine nature. The nearby Praia do Submarino (a 10-minute walk west) offers a similar experience for those who appreciate secluded, clothing-optional beaches.
