Praia de Monte Gordo

Praia de Monte Gordo holds a special distinction in Portugal - it has the warmest sea water in the country. This eastern Algarve beach sits where the Atlantic begins to feel Mediterranean influences through the Strait of Gibraltar, creating water temperatures that can reach 24°C in summer - significantly warmer than the western Algarve coast. The beach itself is impressively vast - wide, flat, and seemingly endless, with fine golden sand that's perfect for long walks, beach games, and sandcastle building. The gentle slope into warm, calm water makes it ideal for families with young children. Behind the beach, a lively promenade stretches along the seafront, lined with restaurants, cafes, and shops catering to both Portuguese and Spanish visitors (the border is just minutes away). Monte Gordo has a different character from the cliff-backed cove beaches of central Algarve. It's flatter, more developed, and more traditionally 'seaside resort' in style. What it lacks in dramatic scenery it makes up for in practical beach qualities - warm water, safe swimming, excellent facilities, and a buzzing atmosphere in summer. The town also serves as a convenient base for exploring the Ria Formosa, the Spanish border town of Ayamonte, and the historic castle of Castro Marim.
