Praia de Odeceixe

Location: undefined, western Algarve

An award-winning beach at the border of Alentejo and Algarve, where the River Seixe meets the Atlantic. This unique horseshoe-shaped beach offers both Atlantic surfing waves and calm river lagoon pools—perfect for families and surfers alike.

Praia de Odeceixe is a truly unique beach that won the prestigious 'Seven Wonders of Portugal 2012' award in the cliff beaches category, and it's easy to see why. Located at the border between the Alentejo and Algarve regions, where the River Seixe flows into the Atlantic Ocean, this 300-meter horseshoe-shaped beach offers the best of both worlds. The Atlantic-facing western side receives consistent swells that make it one of the best surf spots on the Costa Vicentina. The beach break works at any time of year, with waves suitable for beginners in the white water and more challenging conditions further out. Two surf schools operate here, offering lessons and equipment rental. The river side is what makes Odeceixe special for families. The Ribeira de Seixe curls behind the sand, creating warm, shallow lagoon pools at low tide—perfect for children to splash safely while parents relax nearby. At mid-to-high tide, the river is deep enough for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. The beach is framed by dramatic black cliffs topped with lush vegetation, and a distinctive 'island' of rock rises in the middle of the sand, adding to the surreal landscape. The remote location within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park means development is limited and crowds are few, even in summer.
