Praia de Sao Rafael
Location: undefined, central Algarve
One of the Algarve's most scenic yet accessible beaches, Praia de Sao Rafael sits in a sheltered cove surrounded by dramatic red-orange cliffs. Perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, and exploring nearby sea caves.
Praia de Sao Rafael is often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Albufeira region, combining dramatic scenery with unusually easy access. Located on the western side of the Sesmarias headland, this 250-meter beach sits in a sheltered cove surrounded by striking red and orange-colored cliffs that create a natural amphitheater of color.
What sets Sao Rafael apart from other scenic Algarve beaches is its accessibility. Unlike many cliff beaches that require steep staircases, Sao Rafael features a gentle sloping walkway that makes it one of the most accessible scenic beaches in the region—a welcome feature for families with strollers, elderly visitors, or anyone with mobility considerations.
The sheltered cove creates ideal conditions for water activities. Kayak and SUP rentals are available directly on the beach, and paddling out to explore the surrounding coastline reveals hidden coves, dramatic rock formations, and secluded sea caves. The calm, clear waters also make this an excellent spot for swimming and snorkeling.
