Praia do Barranco
Location: undefined, western Algarve
A wild, untouched paradise known as the 'hippie beach' of the Algarve. Reached only by a bumpy dirt road, this remote cove within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park attracts free spirits seeking complete escape from civilization.
Praia do Barranco is perhaps the most unconventional beach in the Algarve—a wild, remote paradise that has earned its nickname as the 'hippie beach.' Located within the protected Costa Vicentina Natural Park between Sagres and Vila do Bispo, this 200-meter stretch of sand sits at the mouth of two ravines (barrancos), giving the beach its evocative name.
Reaching Barranco is an adventure in itself. From the village of Raposeira, a rough, unmarked dirt road winds 4 kilometers to the coast. There are no signs pointing the way—you'll need GPS and a sense of adventure. The bumpy track deters casual visitors, preserving the beach's wild character and attracting those who value solitude over convenience.
The atmosphere here is unlike anywhere else in the Algarve. Campervan dwellers park along the clifftops, some staying for days or weeks. Regular visitors have built circular stone windbreaks on the northern side. The scent of pine trees mingles with sea air, and the only sounds are waves, birdsong, and occasionally, acoustic guitar. Naturism is common and accepted.
The beach itself is flanked by imposing limestone cliffs and backed by dunes on the western side. The clear waters are excellent for snorkeling and diving, with a seabed rich in marine life including colorful fish and crustaceans. There are no facilities whatsoever—bring everything you need and leave no trace.
Activities: swimming, photography, surfing, snorkeling
