Praia do Barranco das Belharucas
Location: undefined, central Algarve
A stunning Blue Flag beach at the western end of the famous 7km Falésia stretch, named after the European bee-eaters that nest in its dramatic ochre and white cliffs. Where limestone gives way to spectacular sandstone formations.
Praia do Barranco das Belharucas marks a geological transition point on the Algarve coast—where the deeply eroded limestone cliffs of the western Algarve give way to the spectacular sand and clay formations that stretch eastward for kilometers. Named after the European bee-eaters (belharucas) that dig their nests into the soft cliff faces, this Blue Flag beach offers both natural drama and practical amenities.
The beach sits at the mouth of a ravine (barranco) that cuts through the ochre-colored cliffs, creating a dramatic natural entrance to the sand. The vegetation grows exuberantly in this sheltered valley, including stone pines and coastal scrub like juniper, adding to the scenic beauty. From April to September, you can often spot the colorful bee-eaters swooping around the cliffs, catching insects on the wing.
This is the western starting point of the famous Praia da Falésia, which extends 7 kilometers eastward to Vilamoura. Many visitors walk the clifftop trail or along the sand at low tide, experiencing one of the Algarve's most photographed coastal stretches. The cliffs here display stunning stratified layers of red, orange, and white, particularly beautiful in the warm light of early morning or late afternoon.
Two beach restaurants—Golfhino and Mare—provide refreshments and sun lounger rentals (around €20 per day for two loungers and umbrella). Lifeguards patrol during summer, making this a good choice for families despite the moderate access challenge. The gentle slope of the beach allows for safe swimming, and the waters are typically calm.
