Praia do Barraquinho
Location: undefined, central Algarve
A true hidden paradise tucked between Mediterranean vegetation and towering cliffs. This secluded cove features an unusual layout—the sand stretches inland twice as far as the shoreline is wide—with a massive rock islet standing 85 meters offshore.
Praia do Barraquinho (also spelled Barranquinho) is one of the Algarve's most closely guarded secrets—a secluded cove that feels like discovering your own private beach. Nestled within Mediterranean vegetation and sheltered by towering ochre cliffs, this small paradise offers something increasingly rare on the Algarve coast: genuine solitude.
What makes this beach truly unusual is its shape. The extension of sand between the beach access and the sea is almost twice the length of its shoreline, creating an elongated pocket of golden sand that feels more intimate than wider beaches. A massive rock islet stands guard about 85 meters offshore, adding drama to the already spectacular scenery.
The waters here are typically calm and crystal-clear, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. On most summer days, you can see straight to the sandy bottom. However, this is a wild beach with no facilities or lifeguards—swimmers should be confident and cautious, especially on days when the sea is rougher than usual.
Historically, before the construction of the nearby Vila Alba EcoResort, this was an almost-always-deserted beach popular with naturists. While it now sees more visitors (mainly resort guests and boat tour passengers), it remains one of the quietest beaches in the central Algarve. From the clifftops, you can walk west toward the famous Praia da Marinha, making this a perfect starting point for coastal exploration.
