Praia do Burgau

Location: undefined, western Algarve

A charming beach in a traditional fishing village where authentic Portuguese life meets golden sand. Watch fishermen bring in their daily catch while enjoying this unspoiled stretch of coastline between Lagos and Sagres.

Praia do Burgau offers something increasingly rare in the Algarve - an authentic Portuguese fishing village beach experience. The village tumbles down the hillside to a golden sand beach where colorful fishing boats are still pulled up on the sand, and fishermen mend their nets in the afternoon sun. This isn't a preserved museum piece; it's a living community where traditional ways persist alongside careful tourism. The beach itself is a 350-meter stretch of soft golden sand backed by low cliffs. The water is clear and inviting, with good conditions for swimming and snorkeling around the rocky edges. The eastern end of the beach has interesting rock pools to explore at low tide. A small stream crosses the beach, creating patterns in the sand that children love to play in. Burgau sits on the famous Rota Vicentina hiking trail, making it an excellent base for coastal walks. You can walk west toward Salema through beautiful clifftop scenery, or east toward Luz along the Fishermen's Trail. The village has several excellent restaurants serving fresh fish - the catch often comes from the boats you see on the beach - plus cafes and a few small shops selling local products.
