Praia do Molhe
Location: undefined, central Algarve
A charming small beach where the Arade river meets the sea, named after the historic stone pier that has protected vessels for centuries. Perfect for sunset views and beloved by local bodyboarders.
Praia do Molhe takes its name from the long stone pier (molhe) that has guided vessels into the Arade river for centuries. This small but characterful beach sits at the meeting point of river and ocean, offering two distinct experiences: the interior side near the pier has calm, sheltered waters perfect for swimming, while the ocean-facing side catches waves that make it popular with bodyboarders.
The historic pier itself is a landmark, extending into the sea and providing a wonderful walkway for sunset strolls. Historically, this structure protected fishing boats and merchant vessels as they navigated between the open Atlantic and the sheltered waters of the Arade estuary leading to Portimão.
Access is via steps carved into the cliff, adding to the secluded feel. Despite being just a short walk from charming Ferragudo village, the beach maintains a quiet, local atmosphere—you're more likely to find Portuguese families than international tourists here.
While there are no facilities directly on the beach, refreshments are available at neighboring beaches reached by walking around the rocks to the left. The lack of sunbed rentals and beach bars preserves the authentic character. Praia do Molhe is especially beloved at sunset, when the whole scene—pier, cliffs, and sea—is bathed in golden light.
