Praia do Peneco

Location: undefined, central Algarve

Albufeira's most photographed beach, famous for its iconic tunnel carved through the rock and the 28-meter cliff elevator. Golden sand framed by dramatic sandstone cliffs with the distinctive 'peneco' boulder landmark.

Praia do Peneco is the crown jewel of Albufeira's coastline and arguably the most photographed beach in the resort town. Named after the distinctive large boulder ('peneco' in Portuguese) that sits prominently on the sand, this beach has become synonymous with Albufeira itself. What makes Peneco truly special is its dramatic access: a tunnel carved directly through the golden sandstone cliff connects the old town above to the beach below. This atmospheric passage, emerging onto golden sand with turquoise water stretching ahead, has graced countless postcards and Instagram feeds. For those who prefer not to walk through the tunnel, a modern 28-meter elevator—built in 2008—whisks visitors from the clifftop to the beach in seconds. The beach stretches for several hundred meters of fine golden sand, backed by impressive ochre cliffs that glow in the afternoon sun. Blue Flag certified, it offers excellent facilities including lifeguards, sunbed rentals, beach bars (the popular Roca Beach Bar is a local favorite), showers, and restaurants. The water is typically calm and clear, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. One of Peneco's greatest assets is its connectivity: at low tide, you can walk west to Praia dos Pescadores, then continue to Praia do Inatel and even Praia dos Alemães, creating a magnificent beach-hopping experience along Albufeira's coastline. Adventurous visitors can also explore the Gruta do Xorino, a sea cave accessible from the beach.
