Praia do Porto de Mós
Location: undefined, western Algarve
Lagos's best surfing beach—a spacious 1km+ stretch of golden sand with consistent Atlantic swells. Quieter than the famous cove beaches, with dramatic cliff backdrop and excellent facilities.
Praia do Porto de Mós is Lagos's hidden gem—a spectacular 1-kilometer stretch of golden sand that remains surprisingly uncrowded even when the famous cove beaches are packed. Located just 4km south of Lagos center, it's the town's second-longest beach after Meia Praia and arguably its most underrated.
What sets Porto de Mós apart is its southwest exposure, which catches the Atlantic swells that other Lagos beaches miss. This makes it the best surfing beach in the Lagos area, attracting surfers and bodyboarders year-round. Several surf schools operate from the beach, offering lessons for beginners and equipment rental for experienced riders. Even when the waves are up, the eastern end of the beach usually has calmer water for swimming.
The setting is dramatic: towering ochre cliffs rise behind the beach, their layered strata telling millions of years of geological history. At low tide, the beach extends significantly, revealing rock pools perfect for exploring. The cliff trails that lead to and from the beach connect to the famous coastal path to Ponta da Piedade, offering some of the Algarve's most scenic hiking.
Facilities are excellent: the Blue Flag beach has lifeguards in summer, sunbed rentals, showers, and several good restaurants including the popular Restaurante O António right on the beach. Unlike the cramped cove beaches, Porto de Mós has space to spread out—even in peak August, you'll find room to breathe.
Facilities: restaurant, lifeguard, toilets, sunbed-rental, showers, surf-equipment-rental
Activities: swimming, surfing, bodyboarding, kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking
Parking: Large free car park at beach level. Additional parking along the access road. Fills up on summer weekends but space usually available on weekdays.
