Praia do Vale de Centeanes

Praia do Vale de Centeanes holds a special place in Algarve beach culture as the western starting point of the legendary Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos)—consistently rated one of Europe's most beautiful coastal walks. But this wide, golden beach is far more than just a trailhead; it's a destination in its own right. Framed by dramatic terracotta-colored cliffs that glow in the afternoon sun, the beach offers excellent swimming conditions and Blue Flag certification. The soft, clean sand stretches generously, meaning you can usually find space even in peak season. Unlike some of the tiny hidden coves nearby, Vale de Centeanes has real facilities: a popular beachside restaurant called O Stop, lifeguards in summer, and toilets and showers. The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail stretches 5.7 kilometers eastward from here to Praia da Marinha, passing through some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in Europe. The route crosses seven 'hanging valleys'—places where ancient streams cut through the cliffs but now end abruptly above sea level. Along the way, you'll pass the iconic Benagil Cave, the tunnel-accessed Praia do Carvalho, and the photogenic Alfanzina Lighthouse. The moderate hike takes 2-3 hours one way. Many visitors start their hike early from Marinha (where parking is easier), walk the trail westward, and reward themselves with an afternoon at Vale de Centeanes before catching an Uber back to their car (about €6). It's a perfect way to experience both the trail and a relaxing beach day.
