Praia do Vau
Location: undefined, central Algarve
A family-favorite golden beach sheltered by dramatic red cliffs, known for its natural medicinal clay and calmer atmosphere compared to neighboring Praia da Rocha. Blue Flag certified with excellent facilities.
Praia do Vau offers everything you'd want in an Algarve family beach: golden sand, calm water, dramatic scenery, and excellent facilities—but without the crowds of nearby Praia da Rocha. Tucked between red-ochre cliffs just 2km west of the famous resort beach, Vau has maintained a more relaxed, local atmosphere.
The beach stretches about 950 meters and is partly sheltered from the wind by its dramatic rock walls, creating a comfortable spot even on breezy days. The water is generally calm, clean, and safe for swimming, though you should watch for submerged rocks in a few areas. Blue Flag certification ensures high standards of water quality and facilities.
What makes Praia do Vau unique is its natural medicinal clay. The red cliffs release clay that locals have used for centuries for its purported healing properties. You'll often see visitors applying the clay to their skin—it's become something of a local tradition. Whether you believe in the medicinal benefits or not, it's certainly a unique beach experience.
Facilities include restaurants, toilets, sunbed rentals, paddleboard and pedal boat hire, and seasonal lifeguards. The beach is also wheelchair accessible. For those without a car, buses from Portimão make it easy to reach. Combine a morning at Vau with an afternoon exploring the clifftop paths toward Praia da Rocha or the quieter Praia do Alemão to the west.
