Praia do Zavial is one of the Algarve's hidden coastal gems, a wide horseshoe-shaped beach in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, close to the quiet village of Raposeira. Located within the protected Costa Vicentina Natural Park, the beach offers a striking mix of white sand, a clay area in the central zone, and dramatic gray rock formations.
The true star of Zavial is its right-hand point break off the rocks on the western side. Depending on the swell, conditions range from beginner-friendly beach break to world-class barrels that can hold waves up to 8ft. The beach truly shows its potential with a big northwest swell, more common in winter, when the dominant north wind creates offshore conditions and magazine-worthy waves.
Beyond surfing, Zavial holds a Blue Flag certificate for clean water and excellent facilities. The calm eastern side is perfect for swimming, while the rocky areas offer rewarding snorkeling opportunities on calm days. The left side of the beach, protected by steep rocky walls, serves as an unofficial naturist area where nudists coexist peacefully with other beachgoers.
On the clifftop between Zavial and neighboring Ingrina beach sit the atmospheric ruins of Bateria do Zavial, an 18th-century fortification destroyed by the devastating 1755 earthquake.
