Praia dos Olhos de Água
Location: undefined, central Algarve
A unique beach where natural freshwater springs—the 'eyes of water'—bubble up through the golden sand at low tide. Set between ochre cliffs near Albufeira, this former fishing village retains its authentic charm with traditional boats and relaxed beach cafés.
Praia dos Olhos de Água is one of the Algarve's most fascinating beaches, named after the natural freshwater springs—the 'olhos de água' or 'eyes of water'—that bubble up through the sand at low tide. This natural phenomenon, documented by Arab writers centuries ago, creates small pools of cold, drinkable freshwater right on the beach, something you won't find anywhere else in the region.
The beach lies in Olhos de Água, a former fishing village that has retained much of its authentic charm despite its proximity to tourist-heavy Albufeira (just 6km away). Traditional fishing boats still dot the sand, and the palm-lined promenade above the beach is lined with relaxed cafés and seafood restaurants. The atmosphere here feels distinctly more Portuguese than the resort beaches further west.
The beach itself is framed by golden and ochre cliffs, with interesting rock formations at the eastern end creating natural pools that children love to explore—though water shoes are recommended as the rocks can be slippery. At low tide, you can walk west along the sand all the way to the spectacular Praia da Falésia, making for a memorable coastal stroll.
Blue Flag certified, the beach offers excellent facilities including lifeguards, sunbed rentals, showers, and restaurants. The water is generally calm and clean, ideal for families. Early morning visits reward you with the freshwater springs at their most visible, before the crowds arrive and the tide rises to cover them.
