Praia Grande (Ferragudo)
Location: undefined, central Algarve
A stunning 627-meter crescent of white sand where the Arade River meets the Atlantic, watched over by a photogenic 17th-century fort. Protected by the river's mole, the calm waters and local atmosphere make this a favorite among families and those seeking authentic Portuguese beach culture.
Praia Grande, meaning 'Big Beach,' lives up to its name with a magnificent 627-meter crescent of white sand on the eastern bank of the Arade River estuary, directly opposite the famous Praia da Rocha. This is where the river meets the Atlantic, creating a unique environment with clean, calm waters that have earned Blue Flag certification.
The beach's most distinctive feature is the photogenic 17th-century Fort São João do Arade, perched on the rocky promontory at the northern end. Built to defend the port of Portimão, this fortress has become one of the most photographed monuments in the Algarve, especially at sunset when its walls glow golden against the darkening sky. Though privately owned and closed to visitors, it provides a stunning backdrop for beach days.
Protected by the river's mole (breakwater), Praia Grande enjoys remarkably calm waters most of the year—a rarity on the Atlantic coast. This makes it ideal for families with children, as well as for water sports like paddleboarding and kayaking. The mix of river and ocean water is clean and safe for swimming, regularly tested for Blue Flag standards.
The beach infrastructure is excellent: three beach restaurants serve fresh seafood, there are clean bathrooms and showers above the sand, and you can rent kayaks, pedalos, and sunbeds. From here, an incredible 6km coastal walk leads over the cliffs to Carvoeiro, passing the 1893 Ponta do Altar lighthouse and several hidden coves along the way.
